Praise for Charley's Novel

“This long-lost treasure is a glimpse into the lives of the very rich and the very poor and how quickly one can become the other.  Charley poignantly describes greed and its dire consequences.  Readers will get a glimpse of life in the 1879-1880's, with its trials and triumphs.”

~LINDA GASS, Archives Assistant, Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City, Tennessee

“Mr. Peck has opened a portal to another time by bringing this long-forgotten publication to light.  A finding such as this should encourage us all to look into our family histories for treasures untold.”

~RYAN JOHNSON, Library Director, BA Historical Studies, MA Library Science, O’Fallon, Illinois

“Anyone desiring to better understand the post Reconstruction era should consider reading this book. Filled with stories related to ore mining, slavery adjustments, and the lives of the poor and rich in the southern states, this book brings a depth to the reality of the time that compliments any other narrative.”

~JUSTICE BRATTON, 11 years old, homeschooled in Kathmandu, Nepal

Prof. Charles Talbot Peck

CHARLES TALBOT PECK (1857-1882) was born on Henderson Plantation in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana to Dr. Isham Talbot Peck and his wife Emma Elizabeth (Henderson) Peck. He was the third child, and younger brother of Ada (of Ada's Journal). Educated at the Reagan High School for Boys in Morristown, TN, he moved to Cincinnati and became a lawyer in his early 20s. In April 1879, at age 21, he used his “idle hours” to write his breathtaking novel and then published it as a serial. Cross Mountain Books is pleased to present Charley’s Novel in book format for the first time in history. Mary Anderson and Peacock the Mineralogist, The Bad Luck of a Young Southern Girl will bring you to your feet with outrage at the manipulative domestic violence, and to your knees in tears over God’s providential care for this family through their many years of struggle.
